How to Unclip Clipless Pedals

Learning how to unclip from clipless pedals is like learning how to ride a bike. There may be some falling down when plans to stop and unclip do not pan out. After establishing muscle memory of the unclipping motion, you will be able to arrive on the scene and unclip like a pro. Since cycling shoes do not provide adequate traction on wet or smooth surfaces, especially higher-end road bike shoes with carbon soles, planning ahead is key. Awareness of road surface conditions and elevations can prevent an ill-timed fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the bike's brakes to slow down while surveying the road surface for possible hazards, such as gravel, puddles, mud or wet leaves. Target a safe stopping point.

    • 2

Remove one foot from the clipless pedals before stopping the bike. Press lightly on the ball of the foot and then quickly snap the heel away from the bike frame in one quick movement. If the clip does not release, do not tug at it. Repeat the quick, strong heel snap away from the bike until the clip releases the shoe. Do not pull at it. This can prolong the release or cause ankle strain if you try to twist the heel.

    • 3

Remove the foot from the pedal as you come to a stop and place it solidly on the ground.

    • 4

Engage the brakes to secure the bike in a stopped position. Lean the bike slightly to the ground-foot side and snap the heel of the opposite foot away from the bike frame and out of the clip.
