1
Go to a bowling alley, preferably one where you bowl regularly and where you plan on playing in a league. Play at least three practice games each time you make a trip to the alley. This helps you to get a better feel for the lanes and their condition, so you will learn a pattern of making your spares as well as shooting strikes.

2
Buy your own bowling ball if you don't already own one. Visit the pro shop in your local bowling alley and ask the owner or an employee about different types of balls. Tell him what kind of ball reaction you get when you throw a ball down the lane. For example, if you are a right-handed player and your ball curves from the right side of the lane toward the left, you throw a hook. You will have your fingers measured to get the right size and span when your ball is drilled.

3
Obtain a cleaner that is specifically meant to clean bowling balls. When you bowl on a regular basis, your ball will accumulate a good amount of lane oil, which can affect the reaction it will get while you are playing. Therefore, you should clean your ball regularly by applying cleaner to a towel and wiping the ball with it. Make sure to thoroughly wipe away all of the cleaner as well as the oil when you do so.

4
Insert bowling tape inside the thumb hole of your ball if it feels too loose. This is important in giving you an optimal grip on the bowling ball. If there is too much tape and the hole begins to feel too tight, you can always remove it.

5
Learn proper bowling procedures. This includes wearing good bowling shoes that are comfortable and using proper form on the lanes. Hire a coach or have a friend who is a good bowler help you out and teach you some tips that will improve your game. Bowlers are often more than willing to offer a helping hand to others who want to improve their average.

Find out about bowling camps in your state. Many states hold bowling camps during the summer, and you can inquire about them in bowling alleys in your area or even by researching on the Internet. A bowling camp will offer you daily coaching and practice throughout the day for at least a week or two.
