How to Bowl Well in Ten Pin Bowling

Bowling is a sport that requires superior form and hand-eye coordination to put up a good score. While the arm motion and footwork may appear to be simple, there are actually a number of important things you must do each time to ensure that the ball goes where you want it to. In order to have continued success at the bowling lanes, there are a number of techniques and guidelines that must be followed.

Keep your arm swing free. Make sure not to squeeze your fingers, especially your thumbs, during your swing. Without the added pressure from your fingers, you will be able to swing the ball freely and it will result in a stronger, straighter throw.

Use a 45 degree hand position. With a 45 degree hand position, the hand is partially underneath the ball and partially to the side of it. This hand position promotes the free arm swing mentioned previously, and it also provides you with the most natural position for the ball upon release.

Use the leverage from your lower body. Bend your knees so that you are closer to the ground while simultaneously sliding your back foot toward the foul line to make sure it doesn't turn during your swing. To balance your body, move your non-sliding leg toward the opposite end of your bowling arm.

Finish your swing up close to the foul line. At the end of your delivery, your foot should be approximately 6 inches from the line for the best possible swing. By releasing the ball this close to the line, it is released further down the line and conserves energy on its way toward the pins. This results in more power and a straighter line toward the pins.
