How to Bowl Better

Bowling involves throwing a ball down a wooden lane in an attempt to knock down the pins at the end. It sounds easy, but improving your skills and increasing your score takes practice and focus. If you really enjoy bowling, consider purchasing a professionally fitted ball. The interaction between your hand and the bowling ball can profoundly affect the quality of your game. That said, loosen up and remember to have fun. Bowling is, after all, just a game.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch before beginning your game. Warmed-up muscles may improve your game and help prevent injury. Roll your head around to stretch your neck, target your arms by reaching above your head and touch your toes to stretch your legs.

    • 2

Pick up several balls and choose the one that fits best. A bowling ball should be light enough so that you can easily maneuver it. Your thumb should brush against either side of the thumb hole, but you should still have enough room to turn your thumb around.

    • 3

Look at the arrows on the bowling lane floor as you throw the ball. This may improve your swing. Left-handers should aim for the arrow the second farthest-from-the-left, while right-handed bowlers should aim for the second farthest-from-the-right arrow.

    • 4

Practice your timing. As you walk toward the dots on the lane where you will release the ball, swing the ball back behind you. For optimal timing, your ball should reach the highest point of its backward swing as you finish your second-to-last step.

    • 5

Take your last step while you simultaneously swing the ball forward and release. Keep your eye on the arrows and hope for a strike. Improving your form may help you bowl better.
