1
Find a pair of bowling shoes that are the right length and width. This can be a tricky assignment if you are looking for a pair of inexpensive shoes because they generally are made in one width. Before you whip out your wallet or credit card, try on several bowling shoes to find a pair that comes closest to your foot size. If you are looking for an expensive pair, they ususally come in different widths. Either way, be sure the pair you choose is comfortable, yet allows for your mobility.

2
Make sure that the bowling shoes you buy take into account that you are either left- or right-handed, because the soles of the shoes are different based on which way you throw the ball. For instance, if you are right-handed, your left bowling shoe should make it easy for you to slide. If you are left-handed, the reverse is true. This caviat most likely is not needed for the veteran bowler; but if you are new to the game, be sure you don't buy the wrong shoes.

Recognize that prices are all over the lot and they are based on brand names, as well as durability. If you only bowl occasionally, you do not need a pair of top-of-the-line shoes. However, if you bowl often, good bowling shoes are a tremendously good investment and can improve your game.

Always buy bowling shoes that have an insole that's cushioned, has ample padding and a soft collar. Not only will the shoes be more comfortable, they will help you keep your balance while you slide on the alley by making sure your foot is held firmly in place.

Don't be in a hurry to buy your first pair of bowling shoes, because if you bowl infrequently, they will last you a long time. Ask an experienced bowler about which brands he prefers, both for comfort and for improving his game. Once you have done this, head for a mall or a sporting goods store to check out what brands they carry.
