How to Choose Bowling Balls

1
Know which type of bowler you are before choosing a bowling ball. A bowler that throws with a curve will need to choose a different ball than one who simply throws a straight ball. If you don't know which you are, you're probably a straight thrower.

2
Begin by choosing the right bowling ball weight. It may take you a bit of time to know which bowling ball weight is ideal for you. You should choose a bowling ball weight that doesn't put too much strain on your arm or shoulder. At the same time, the ball shouldn't be so light that you can whip the ball down the lane with little effort. If the ball has hang time when you throw it towards the pins, you're probably using a ball that is too light. If, however, the ball drops immediately before you follow through, you should consider using a lighter bowling ball.

Make sure that your fingers fit perfectly in the holes of the balling ball. Once you've determined the perfect bowling ball weight, it's important to know that you can grip the bowling ball correctly. If the holes of the bowling ball are too big, you will have trouble aiming your throw. If the holes are too small, you could hurt your fingers.

4
Check the ball for any imperfections. The slightest knick in a bowling ball could cause your ball to move a fraction of an inch either way. That small movement could be the difference between a strike and a split. Be sure that your ball is void of any imperfections before using it.

5
Take practice throws with a few bowling balls before choosing one. If, for example, you're in a bowling league, your team will be given a certain amount of time to take practice throws. Use this time as a way to experiment with a few bowling balls. Try different throws with a couple of different bowling balls until you have found the perfect one for you.
