How to Buy Bowling Balls

1
Familiarize yourself with the radius to gyration, more commonly known as RG of a bowling ball. The lower the RG rating, the easier the ball will begin to rotate on the lane and the sooner it will hook. The right RG for you depends on your style of play, and if you're a beginner you may choose to not worry about this too much.

2
Research the correct coverstock for your bowling ball. Most beginner bowlers use a polyurethane cover, as there is little friction when the bowling ball meets the bowling lane. Reactive resin balls have a higher friction, while particle coverstock will provide the smoothest interaction with the bowling lane.

3
Determine the weight of the bowling ball you're most comfortable with. A general rule of thumb is 10 percent of your body weight, or 2 or 3 lbs. heavier than the weight of the bowling ball you choose at your local bowling alley.
-
4
Visit a professional to have your measurements taken and have your bowling ball drilled to fit. The better your fit, the heavier the ball you can safely handle. The heavier the bowling ball, the better your game. A properly fitted ball allows you to safely bowl with a ball that is heavier than your normal house ball.
