1
Consider the weight you will need. Bowling balls are available in a wide range of weights, from 6 pounds for children to 16 pounds for the strongest bowlers. Choose a lighter ball and you may gain more control that allows you to throw the ball faster. Send more force into the pins by using a heavier ball. This could help you throw more strikes. Select a ball weight that gives you enough control and speed while still being heavy enough to produce strikes.

2
Determine a proper sizing and placing of the finger holes on the bowling ball. When you first purchase a bowling ball, you can have the finger holes custom drilled to fit your hand. Space the finger holes wide enough that you can comfortably reach them. Set them close enough that you can easily grip the ball. Make sure you can get your fingers far enough into the holes to maintain control when throwing the ball.

3
Choose a material for your bowling ball. Select a ball made out of a material suited for bowling. Older bowling balls were made of hardened rubber, but most modern balls consist of a urethane or polyester shell with a composite core. According to Best Bowling, reactive-resin balls and particle balls are also available. These materials can increase the hook of the bowling ball.

Test a ball of the same weight and material you are considering. While you won't be able to test the placement of the finger holes, you can get a general feel for how a ball of a specific weight and material will react when you throw it.
