Finding a Foundation
-
1
Find the location for the punching bag by inspecting the ceiling beams and joists. The first thing you have to check is free space around the bag. In order to use your punching bag optimally, you'll need about 5 to 6 feet of space around it. Do not to hang a punching bag near a lightweight wall. Inspect the ceiling joists by looking at their dimension for stability and strength. If the joist is at least 6 inches wide and 6 to 8 inches high, it's a good choice. You should also consult a professional construction engineer before making the final decision on placement.

2
Mark the places on the joists and the ceiling with a pencil. Use the metal element with pre-drilled holes as a template. For best result, you can make one line of the plus sign as long so it reaches a joist on both sides. It that case, the punching bag will be positioned between two ceiling joists. If you don't have such a long metal tool, simply attach the bag on a single joist, bending the sides of the metal bar around to grab the joist.

3
Drill holes for the screws using a power drill, following the marks precisely.
-
4
Use a welding machine to weld a metal ring in the center of the plus sign. Make sure the connection is very strong and durable.
-
5
With screws, attach the finished metal bar with a ring in the middle to the ceiling joists. The foundation for your punching bag will be ready for the chains that hold the bag.
