What Are the Benefits of Speed Bag Training?
-
Hand-Eye Coordination
-
Speed bag training will increase your hand-eye coordination. Intense focus is required to repetitively hit the bag at high speeds. If you're an amateur boxer, you may often miss the speed bag, but by starting slow and working up to higher speeds, you can increase hand-eye coordination equally with both fists. Hand-eye coordination improves accuracy in boxing as well as in almost any ball sport.
Rhythm
-
Boxing is often performed like a dance. By working with a speed bag, you will come to know your rhythm and possibly learn how to read your opponent's rhythm. You must coordinate your punching rhythm with the rhythm of the bag as it rebounds. By counting out 1-2-3 as you punch the bag, you work up to faster rhythms.
Reaction Time
-
Being able to block a punch may be more important than throwing one in a boxing match. Speed bag training forces you to react quickly. The bag comes back at you with the same speed at which you hit it. Reaction time improves as you decrease the amount of rebounds the bag takes before you hit it again. If you're a beginner, you may allow seven rebounds at first, but you can work your way down to five and then three with consistent practice.
Strength
-
Perhaps one of the more obvious benefits is increased upper-body strength. Speed bag training helps you increase muscle size and definition because you are required to hold up your arms for minutes at a time, throwing powerful, fast punches to hit the bag as it rebounds. With several three-minute intervals, you have performed an intense upper-body workout.
