List of Boxing Weight Classes

The Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) has members from state commissions throughout the United States and Canada and is a regulatory commission for combative sports, including boxing. ABC's regulatory guidelines lay out the rules for boxing matches, including weight classes. Boxers fight with others within their weight class. Within ABC guidelines, weight classes apply to both male and female boxers.
  1. Flyweight

    • There are four weight classes within the flyweight category. The mini flyweight includes fighters up to and including 105 pounds. The light flyweight class includes fighters at 105 to 108 pounds. The flyweight class includes fighters at 108 to 112 pounds. Super Flyweight fighters fight at 112 to 115 pounds. All flyweight fighters are allowed a weight difference of up to 3 pounds. They use 8 oz. gloves.

    Bantamweight

    • There are two classes of bantamweight fighters. The bantamweight class is 115 to 118 pounds. Bantamweight fighters are allowed a weight difference up to 3 lbs. Super bantamweight fighters compete at 118 to 122 pounds and have a weight difference of not more than 4 lbs. Both classes of bantamweights use 8 oz. gloves.

    Lightweight

    • There are two classes of lightweight fighters. Lightweight fighters compete at 130 to 135 pounds. Super lightweight fighters weigh in at 135 to 140 pounds. Both classes of lightweight fighters allow a weight difference of not more than 5 pounds and use 8 oz. gloves.

    Welterweight

    • There are two classes of welterweight fighters. The welterweight class competes at 140 to 147 pounds. Welterweight fighters use 8 oz. gloves. Super welterweight fighters are between 147 to 154 pounds. Super welterweight fighters use 10 oz. gloves. Both classes of welterweight allow a weight difference of up to 7 pounds.

    Middleweight

    • There are two classes of middleweight fighters. They compete at 154 and 160 pounds. Super middleweight fighters compete at 160 to 168 pounds. Both classes allow a weight difference of not more than 7 lbs and use 10 oz. gloves.

    Heavyweight

    • There are three classes of heavyweight fighters. Light heavyweight fighters compete at 168 to 175 pounds. Light heavyweight fighters must have a weight difference not more than 7 pounds. Cruiserweight fighters are 175 to 200 pounds. The weight difference requirement for cruiserweight fighters is no more than 12 pounds. And heavyweight fighters are over 200 pounds. There are no limits on weight differences between fighters. All heavyweight fighters use 10 oz. gloves.
