Tips on Using a Punching Bag

Working with a punching bag can be an effective way to build both your strength and your cardiovascular system. For many people, however, the first experience with a bag leads them to punch wildly, losing their balance and not generating much power. By practicing several techniques, you can not only maximize your speed and strength, but can increase the effectiveness of your workout.
  1. Starting Out

    • The temptation is to step in and begin swinging at the bag as hard as possible. This leads to bad habits and has the potential to cause injury. Start by working on your form and getting a feel for throwing punches at the bag. As you gain a comfort level, you can work on adding power to your throws.

    Balance

    • Though it sounds simple, being able to find the right punching distance is important. Too close to the bag and you will end up pushing the bag, reducing the power of the punch and increasing the time it takes for your arm to return into position --- which can leave you vulnerable against a live opponent. Stand too far from the bag and you will make minimal contact. Ideally you should find a distance that allows you to hit the bag with your arm at full extension. This will both maximize your power and speed.

    Speed and Power

    • Once you have mastered keeping your balance while punching, gaining speed and power become easier. Work on "snapping" your punches, throwing short, quick punches. At first they may not have the same type of sting that big haymaking punches might have. But as you continue to work on the technique, you will notice that the power of the strikes will increase.

    Self-Defense

    • It may seem silly to work on defensive techniques against something that can not punch back. However, people can sometimes get lazy against the bag, creating bad habits that leave them unprotected if they were to face a live opponent. Instead of standing still and throwing punches, pretend that you are facing a real person and continually move while attacking the bag. This will not only help your defensive skills, but also add an extra element of fitness to your workout.
