How to Fit Cross Country Ski Boots

Unlike alpine ski boots, which fit like vice grips on your feet, sizing cross-country ski boots is more like sizing street shoes or hiking boots, where you go for something more comfort oriented. The exceptions are for skate skiers and racers, who size the boots a little more snugly. Getting the right fit requires planning for the type of skiing you are doing and wearing the appropriate socks. Unlike alpine racers, Nordic racers often wear thicker socks for warmth.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear the right sock combination when you go to try on boots. Most cross-country skiers like to wear a light, thin, wicking liner sock and then an insulating wool sock over that.

    • 2

Try on the boot and stand up in it, checking how the width feels inside the boot.

    • 3

Lace up the boot, kicking your heel down into the boot once as you do so.

    • 4

Stand up again and check to see where your toes are. Skate skiers and Nordic racers look for a boot that is sized so that their toes just lightly brush against the end of the boot. Recreational skiers look for something with a little more toe space, which gives the added benefit of being able to wear thicker socks if it gets colder.

Repeat the process with the other foot and with other boot sizes and styles until you find the best fit.
