How to Size Nordic Skis

The term "Nordic skiing" is an umbrella covering traditional cross-country skiing, skate skiing, and backcountry touring, and the skis for these types of skiing are all slightly different, both in construction and in sizing. Traditional stride skis are longer and skinnier, skate skis are shorter and stiffer, and backcountry touring skis are wider and often have partial or full metal edges to assist with downhill and sidehill performance. Figuring out the proper size for a new pair of skis is not too difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out your height in centimeters. Multiply your height in feet by 12 to convert it to inches. Add any additional inches to this figure to determine your total height in inches. Then multiply this total by 2.54 and round the result to the nearest whole number. Write down the result, which is your height in centimeters.

    • 2

Know what your weight is, especially for backcountry touring skis. If you will be carrying a pack when you ski, factor in the average weight of the pack as well. Record the result as the total weight the skis will be supporting.

    • 3

Figure out the primary type of skiing you will be doing. All skis will generally be of different lengths, depending on the activity.

    • 4

Multiply your height in centimeters by 1.16 for traditional cross-country skis, by 1.12 for skate skis, and by 1.14 for backcountry touring skis. The resulting number is the baseline for your recommended ski length.

    • 5

Add length to the baseline length if you are heavier or skiing with a pack. You can also compensate for the added weight by choosing a wider ski.

    • 6

Consult the size charts from each manufacturer and talk to the ski shop personnel about any special needs you may have. The manufacturers sometimes create recommended size charts for their skis, and shop personnel can help you customize your ski from your baseline measurement based on any needs you have.
