How to Buy Figure Skating Gear
Instructions

1
Buy snug-fitting skates. Women should have white or tan skates and men should have black. Consider buying used skates, especially if they will be quickly outgrown.
-
2
Protect your skate blades with skate guards made from rubber or plastic. Slip the guards on the blades when walking in your skates on surfaces other than rubber or carpet.
-
3
Perform in a skating dress and tights if you are female. Competition clothing can be very expensive with elaborate embellishments. Tights come in different styles, including footed, footless, stirrup or over the boot. Women can wear boot covers or not. Men should wear skating pants.
-
4
Practice in any tight-fitting clothes, such as leggings. Wear gloves to keep your hands warm, especially if you are falling a lot.
-
5
Place cloth "soakers" on your blades when the skates are not in use. Soakers absorb moisture and prevent the blade from rusting.
-
6
Store your gear in a skate bag. The Zuca Bag is popular because it has wheels and a seat on top which skaters sit on to put on skates.
