Measure the length and width of both feet. This is important because the girl's feet may not be the same size. Girls should wear a thin pair of socks when skating, so make the necessary adjustments.

Place the girl's feet into a pair of skates. You may need to try on several pairs before finding the right ones. The size of the skates will vary by manufacturer. The ideal pair will fit snugly in the heel, arch and ball of the girl's feet. Her toes should be able to move slightly, but her entire foot should not slide inside the skates.

Tie the skates snugly. The laces should be tight enough to hold the skater's ankles in place but not too tight that they cut off the circulation to her feet. The majority of the pressure should be placed on the top four eyelets of the laces.

Ask the skater to stand up. Her toes should gently press against the front of the skates. They should not bend or feel sore

Purchase boots that are one piece for beginning skaters. These skates also should feature tongue padding to protect and comfort the new skater's feet and ankles. Advanced skaters should consider separately purchasing skates and blades. This will allow for more customization.
