1
Find an ideal candidate for the center position based on build, athletic ability and mentality. Look for a stout player with a wide build and quick feet. The player must have the power to hold a large defensive player and the speed to catch up with the defender after making the snap. Also look for a team player who is willing to work hard and wants to succeed.

2
Place the player with the offensive line group at practice and run through the standard line drills. Drills include hitting the blocking sleds and walking through the steps for each play. Also include the player in speed drills with the receivers to develop a fast first step.
-
3
Pair the center with the quarterback before each practice. Practice 50 snaps before each practice to build consistent timing between the center and the quarterback. Also rotate the backup quarterback to prepare for substitutions during the game.
-
4
Develop the power of the center in the weight room. Practice Olympic lifts like power cleans and snatch cleans to develop explosive power. Focus on low repetitions with heavy weight to gain holding power. The center does not require great aerobic endurance but a fast first step and blocking power are critical.

5
Run shuttle drills to increase the speed of the first step. Have the center snap the ball to a quarterback and run a five yard sprint. The exercise coordinates the snap with an explosive motion.
