How to Run a Booster Club

Booster clubs are essential for raising necessary monies to fund school activities. Booster clubs are an association of people with a common interest — for example, a school football team or marching band. If a school budget is too inflexible to allow the purchase of updated athletic equipment or the funding of a trip to an important band competition, it is time for a booster club to go to work. Running a successful booster organization requires basic organizational skills and a passion for the tasks at hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a constitution and by-laws for the club. State the purpose and function of the club. Note membership requirements — you must have a student currently attending the school with which the club is associated, for example — and dues required for participation. Name a board of directors and officers — if your club decides to include this type of structure — via a vote of booster club members. State the length of time a board member and officer can serve and note additional amendments necessary for the completion of the constitution and by-laws.

    • 2

Create a schedule of events to cover a specified period of time — a school year, for example. Consult with the board of directors, as specified by the constitution and by-laws, before making any decisions on events, times and locations. Delegate responsibilities to club members and officers to ensure that all events are arranged successfully and in a timely manner. Nominate one member to obtain permission to use a location to hold a car wash, for example, and another member to collect hoses and sponges for use during the event.

    • 3

Communicate with club members on a weekly or biweekly basis. Collect email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses of all members to ensure a direct line of communication. Use your computer to send emails or create fliers detailing the club's past and current events and announcing upcoming activities. Provide your direct contact information, so that members can reach you with questions, concerns or ideas.

    • 4

Set action goals for the board of directors, officers and members. Hold monthly meetings to handle standard booster business; call for emergency meetings if unforeseen issues arise suddenly. Lay out a plan of action for accomplishing each goal by designating a time line and benchmarks — things that must be accomplished by a certain point in the time line — to ensure success.

Remain creative and positive. Motivate your members with positive energy and encouraging words. Create a variety of fund-raising ideas — raffle tickets, door-to-door candy sales or running concession stands — to generate revenue and inspire a proactive spirit in all members.
