How to Break In a Football Helmet

If you have a brand spankin' new football helmet, chances are it won't exactly feel comfortable when you first put it on. It will take a few wears to get the helmet accustomed to your head, as the padding is fresh and needs to be molded down. By doing a few simple things to help break in the helmet, you can make it ready for game play without worrying about discomfort while you're trying to focus.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the helmet on and use your hands to push it down against your head, pressing the padding down a little so it's not so snug. Keep it on for a couple hours if possible before taking it off.

    • 2

Pull the chin strap with your finger, holding the tension for a few seconds before releasing. Repeat this a couple of times an hour until the chin strap reaches easily across the bottom of your chin while still supporting it.

    • 3

Put the helmet on and then take it off immediately, repeating as many times as it takes through the day to make the helmet comfortable and easy to take on or off.
