How to Make Block and Tackle Rigging

Block-and-tackle riggings are utilized in many applications for hoisting an item off the ground. They can be purchased or you can create a simple one on your own with a few materials that are easy to come by. If you are in a situation in which you need to lift a deer off the ground for cleaning or keep your camping food out of the way of bears, this knowledge can be extremely useful.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a tree with a branch that is both alive and large enough to hold the object that you need to hoist. The branch needs to be at least 2 feet taller than the height you wish to hoist the item. Throw your rope over the branch.

    • 2

Tie an overhand knot near the end of the rope and pull a short section of the end through. Put a carabiner on this loop.

    • 3

Place the running end of the rope through your second carabiner and again through the first carabiner that you previously attached. Pull the end of the rope until the first carabiner is near the tree branch. Tie the end of the rope to the main trunk of the tree.

    • 4

Place a rope around the object that you are hoisting and clip it to the second carabiner. Place a pad on the tree trunk and pull the running end of the rope around the tree branch to lift the item. Once lifted, tie the running end of the rope to the tree branch for a secure hold.
