How to Make a Block in Football
Instructions
-
Pass Block
-
1
Assume the appropriate stance to protect your quarterback. Your legs should be shoulder-width apart with toes pointing forward and weight on the balls of your feet. Bend your knees slightly and keep your head up.
-
2
Identify the defender you need to block, your assignment on the play. Typically, offensive tackles block defensive ends, guards and centers block defensive tackles, and running backs pick up blitzing linebackers and defensive backs.
-
3
Know where you want to move your opponent. Offensive tackles often shield a defender to the outside to create a pocket for the quarterback. Interior linemen must meet defenders straight up and keep them from moving forward.
-
4
Stay low on your opponent and deliver a hard hit to the defender's chest with both of your hands. Move from low to high on the defender, trying to knock him off balance and maintaining a strong base yourself.
-
5
Offensive tackles force defensive ends to take wider routes to the quarterback. Follow the defender's movements. Keep your knees bent and shuffle your feet backward and sideways. Hands and head stay up, and elbows stay locked inside, providing more power for your pass blocking. Drive your opponent away from the quarterback.
Run Block
-
6
Assume the same initial position you would for a pass block. You don't want to tip off the defense as to what play will be coming. Wide receivers will line up in their regular stance, making the defense believe a pass route is coming.
-
7
Burst forward off the line at the snap of the football. Find the defender you need to block and deliver the first hit with both hands aimed at the player's chest.
-
8
Unlike pass blocking, run blockers move forward, driving defenders away from the ball-carrier. Stay low with your head up as you contact the defender. This gives you leverage, keeps you balanced and strong at the base and also allows you to maintain a visual of your opponent's movement.
-
9
Keep your elbows in and drive your opponent back. Your assignment will frequently change so know where you need to take your defender to open up a hole for your running back.
-
10
Drive your legs as your hands stay engaged with the defender's chest.
