How to Make Varsity Football as a Sophomore

In high school, the varsity football team is almost always made up of juniors and seniors. Because varsity play is as competitive as high school football gets, coaches look for the biggest, strongest and most experienced players. You can find your way onto a varsity team as a sophomore or even a freshman, but it takes talent, hard work at training and some luck. If you put in the time you may find yourself ready for a varsity season, but there is no safe method for making yourself grow faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend your school’s summer football camp, if possible. This helps you train for the season and gets coaches familiar with your strengths and weaknesses.

    • 2

Play football in middle school. You’ll need a strong track record of performance to make the varsity team, and without an extra couple of years from middle school it’s unlikely coaches will take a chance on you in 10th grade. Playing on the junior varsity squad in your freshman year is also helpful.

    • 3

Commit to a training regimen so you will be prepared for the rigors of varsity tryouts and practices. A strong work ethic in the weight room increases your strength and shows coaches you take the work seriously.

    • 4

Talk to current players on the team to get an idea of what to expect from tryouts. It is not impossible to make the team as a sophomore, but you will have to outperform players that have been there in previous years.

    • 5

Work hard during tryouts and do not give up because of small mistakes. Showing coaches that you can adapt to changing situations or accommodate feedback is critical in making a varsity team.
