How to Snap for a Field Goal

The long snapper is one of the most underrated players on a football team. To snap a ball for a kick is not an easy skill, and it requires a great deal of practice and precision. If the snap goes well, the focus is on the kicker and the subsequent success or failure of the attempt. However, if a snap sails high or misses the holder, the result can be absolute disaster on the play. Having a skilled long snapper is essential for a successful football team.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the ball far enough ahead of you that a reach is required to grab it. Put your feet as wide as you must to ensure that you can grasp the football with a strong, flat back.

    • 2

Grab the ball with your right hand. The laces should be in the first finger joint. When you start the snap, the wrist should be rolled over so the laces point slightly to the left and the back of your hand angles down at the turf.

    • 3

Put the other hand on the ball so that the center of the ball is lined up between your second and third fingers. This hand's function is to guide the ball.

    • 4

Look between your legs at the holder. Just like throwing an upright pass, keep him in your vision at all times.

    • 5

Snap the ball backward and keep your hands low throughout the snapping motion. Slide the back of your hand, but not the ball, lightly over the ground toward your target.
