How to Position for a Goal Attack in Soccer

The striker is a soccer team's main attacking player. Usually, teams play with two or three strikers, but occasionally only one striker is tactically deployed if a team is playing defensively. Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup using a central striker and two other attacking players positioned on each flank. The method proved effective. A striker's job is to score the goals for the team, and a sense of pitch positioning can give you a scoring chance.

Instructions

    • 1

Run in a central position toward the opponent's goal on the soccer pitch. Look to attack the opposition when your team has possession of the ball. A central position will be easier to shoot from rather than an angled wide position. An attacking player should always be aware of the best position to score a goal.

    • 2

Look for clear space between the opposing team's defending players. A striker must break free from the close marking by defenders to allow space for a shot on goal. The striker will have time to control the ball and hit a shot more accurately if he has time and space.

    • 3

Call for the ball. Sometimes your teammates in possession of the ball will not be aware of your position. Call their names so they are aware of your position.

    • 4

Run into the penalty box. The ideal position for a shot on goal is around the penalty spot eight yards from goal.

    • 5

Look for a pass. Once you are in a good position, look for the killer pass from a teammate. The ideal pass will be along the ground slightly in front of your feet.

    • 6

Shoot for goal. Once you receive the pass from your offensive teammate, strike the ball low and aim for the corners of the goal. A goalkeeper will struggle to make a save if the ball is heading for the corners.
