How to Design a Football Program

Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States. There are football programs in elementary school, middle school, junior varsity, high school, college, and professional leagues. Starting a new football program presents several tasks to overcome before success can be achieved. The main thing to remember when starting a new football program, regardless of the age or experience of the players, is that the sport is meant to be a fun and exciting endeavor for any of the athletes involved. If this train of thought is lost, you are setting yourself up for a disaster from the start.

Depending on what type of league you are starting, the first step may be to reach an agreement with the school (if applicable) for funding, staff, venue, and athletes. Once you are approved, you can actually begin to assemble your program.

    • 2

Obtain all of the necessary equipment needed to play football. This includes helmets, shoulder pads, leg pads, jerseys, and pants. This is crucial so that once the team is assembled, the athletes can begin practicing immediately.

    • 3

Hire a coaching staff. Putting together a good coaching staff right away will set your program up for success. They will know what to look for in athletes and how to coach them to their full potential.

    • 4

Hold tryouts for your team. The coaching staff will know what to look for in the potential athletes by having them run through basic football-related drills. Once the tryouts have concluded, your coaching staff should have a good idea of which athletes they want on the team. They should also know what position each athlete is best suited for.

    • 5

Start practicing as soon as possible after the tryouts. This will allow the athletes to get to know their positions as well as their new teammates.
