How to Design Your Own Football Shoes

Several well-known shoe companies now offer athletes a way to design their own football shoes or cleats. This feature allows individual football players to stand out and maintain a distinct personal style during practices or workouts. The tool is also useful for football teams or fans who want to design shoes for games that are consistent with team colors and gear. Athletes, fans or teams can choose elements such as model, colors, accents, size, logo and lining.

      Determine your shoe size. If you have played football in the past, you likely already know the best size shoe for your foot. If this is your first time on the playing field, head to a sporting goods store to have your feet measured or even scanned. Some stores will scan your feet and create a digital mold to help you understand the exact measurement and curves of your feet.

      Choose your brand. Nike, Adidas and Reebok all offer online tools that allow consumers to design their own shoes. Before designing online, it may be worthwhile to try on several different brands at a sporting goods store to determine which brand feels the most comfortable on your feet. See Resources for links.

      Select your shoe style. All three websites offer at least a few styles of football shoes that can be selected as a base.

      Select your shoe material only if you are designing a Nike shoe. Adidas and Reebok do not offer this option. For Nike shoes, select from materials for wet and soggy conditions or dry conditions.

      Determine your colors. All three brands offer at least some color selection. Options include color of the material, lining, sole, tongue and laces.

      Personalize your design. Options include adding jewels, team logos, embroidery and more.

      Complete your design by either saving your design for the future or adding it to your cart to checkout. Custom-designed shoes start at $90 as of January 2011.
