How to Design Your Own Football Mouth Piece

The mouthpiece (alternatively called a mouth guard) is an essential piece of safety equipment in the sport of football. Due to the frequency of collisions in the sport, a mouthpiece is important for protecting your teeth and jaw, as well as providing protection against concussions. Mouthpieces can be customized to fit the shape of your mouth (and teeth), providing increased protection in the event of a hard-hitting play.

      Bring a pot of water to a boil and submerge the boil-and-bite mouthpiece under the boiling water for 30 seconds. The boiling water will soften the material, allowing the mouthpiece to be molded to the shape of your teeth and gums. Remove the mouthpiece from the boiling water and hold it under cold water for five seconds -- this will cool the mouthpiece down so it does not burn your mouth.

      Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and bite down -- it is important not to bite down too hard, as this will create an exaggerated mold of your teeth. Keep your teeth firmly on the mouthpiece and suck on it to keep it snug around your gums. Keep the mouthpiece in your mouth for two minutes -- you will know it is molded when it has cooled down completely.

      Remove the guard from your mouth and set it aside for five minutes. After this, put the newly molded mouthpiece in your mouth to make sure it fits properly. The guard should feel snug around your teeth and gums. Keep in mind that mouthpieces can wear out with frequent use, so if you notice the mouthpiece losing its tight feel around your teeth or gums, it is time for a replacement.
