How to Design Your Own Foam Finger

One of several ways a person or school can show their team spirit is to make foam fingers. Fans get into the game by wearing these items to proclaim their team is "#1." A foam finger is a visible piece of sports merchandise that is viewable from the field and across the stands. Creating your own takes a few items and little time.

Instructions

Visit your local arts and crafts store and purchase standard foam. You can ask for specific craft foam if it's in stock. You will want to purchase an amount slightly larger than the measurements you have designed.

Lay the foam on the work bench and trace the outline of the finger. Use the knife to cut the outline of the foam into the measurements you established earlier. Lay one piece of the foam on the workbench and cut the other piece so you now have two equally formed pieces of foam.

Use the marker to draw the hand forming the "number one" sign. You will want to have the index finger much higher than the other digits on the foam hand. You can use a jigsaw or handsaw to help mold or shape the design. Do not make slits between the fingers, as these needs to remain connected.

Lay the one piece of completed foam over the second piece and retrace the outline. Repeat the process above to shape the second piece of foam. Use the marker to outline a measurement roughly 8 inches by 16 inches tall. This opening is where you will slide your hand into the foam. Once the foam pieces are aligned, use a spray foam adhesive to bond the two pieces together. Do not spray inside the slotted hand area.

Choose a color of paint that matches your team or school. Spray the foam and add any trinkets or other items you want to decorate your new finger.
