You can help your child's football career begin before school sports start by enrolling him in a little league football team. There are several leagues available in the Dallas area that offer touch, flag and tackle football games for children of different ages. Most of the teams allow children to join a team once they are 4 or 5 years old.

  1. Farmer's Branch Youth Football

    • In the Dallas suburb of Farmer's Branch, children as young as 5 years old can begin learning the basics of football. The teams are grouped by age. Children 5 and 6 years old play on one team, children 7 and 8 play on another team, 9 and 10 years old play on the junior team, and 11 and 12 years old play on the senior team. The games have four 10-minute-long quarters.The youngest children play flag football and the older children play tackle football. The season begins in late August and continues during the fall. Parents are expected to volunteer at least two hours during the season.

    Metroplex Youth Football

    • The Metroplex Youth Football league allows children from different areas of Dallas to play together. Teams are based out of North Dallas, Southwest Dallas, Mesquite, Irving and Westside. Placement on the teams is also based on age and weight limits. The youngest players are between 4 and 6 years old and do not have a weight limit. They play flag football. The sophomore group is for children 7 and 8 years old, but the maximum an offensive back can weigh is 100 pounds. The junior age group, 9- and 10-year-olds, have a maximum weight of 120 pounds. The senior age group, 11- and 12-year-olds, can weigh up to 140 pounds.

    Carrollton Youth Football League

    • The Carrollton Youth Football league serves the Dallas suburb of Carrollton and the surrounding area by organizing children between 5 and 12 years old on football teams. There are more than 400 players on more than 20 teams in the league. The season begins in August and runs throughout the fall. Players are assigned equipment and uniforms but must buy their own shoes. Teams are divided between tackle teams and flag football teams.
