Quarterback Drills – Waggle Drill for Quarterbacks & Number Drill
Try these two quarterback drills with your teams. The first one, the Waggle Drill, is to get the QB used to snapping head around quick after sweep fake to read the block of the pulling guard(s). The second drill, the Number drill, helps the quarterback spot his receivers quickly.
Waggle Drill for Quarterbacks
How the drill works:
A coach stands in the area that the QB is bootlegging to.
Make sure the QB gets head around quick after a fake of the sweep.
The coach then either holds up an open hand (stop sign, guard is kicking out and QB needs to either set up and throw or duck under neath and then get width) or a closed fist (QB can take normal path).
When they see the hand or fist they make the proper adjustment if need be.
This is a very simple drill, but the QB’s read of this block is a MUST. Only equipment needed is 2 or 3 cones and a ball for each QB.
Number Drill
We have 4 receivers about 7 yards from the quarterback, each one is told a number from 1-4 so the quarterback can hear and know which receiver is what number.
The quarterback then turns his back to the receivers and we will call a number from 1-4 and he must turn around and throw to that person.
They do this for a little bit then the receivers switch spots. It has helped them be able to spot the receivers quicker and get a quicker release to them.
