Youth Football Drills – Handlebars & Hamburgers Drill

Youth Football Drills – Handlebars & Hamburgers DrillThis drill is for the younger kids around 6 to 9 years of age. I do a drill for the offensive line called handlebars and hamburgers.   It helps keep the kids interested and makes it fun for them.

Handlebars & Hamburgers Drill
I show the players the “handle bars” of the defensive linemen which is the part of the shoulder pads right behind the numbers.

Then I tell them as long as they grab right there they can steer the defensive man any where the want and do it legally.

Next I ask them how they eat a hamburger and they show me how they would pull it to their mouth. Then I say okay after you make contact and grab the handle bars then do like you would eat a hamburger and pull them close to you. Then take short powerful steps and drive your man where you want him to go.

So there you have it–the handlebars and hamburgers drill. It’s great for a younger team.

It allows the coaches to have the children’s attention and the coach can then concentrate on the fundamentals of the players blocking and make corrections while the children are in a positive state.
