5 Examples of Good Golf Etiquette
-
Lines on the Green
-
When a golfer is setting up to tee off, it is proper etiquette to never step into their space, or their "putting line," which is an imaginary line that makes up the area in between the ball and the golf cup. Moving into the "putting line" is considered rude and inappropriate while on the golf course.
Grabbing the Flag
-
If you happen to be the first golfer to hole a putt, it's proper etiquette to grab the flag—meaning to pick it up from the ground in preparation for replacing it in the hole when the last player has putted out. This gesture not only helps to speed up the play for others, but it's also a show of simple manners and courtesy. It is considered bad manners on the golf course to let the last player grab the flag, as it will hold up play time.
Yelling FORE
-
On the golf course, safety should be considered the most important aspect while playing. If you happen to hit a bad shot, be sure to yell "FORE" to give the other golfers a heads-up if they are in danger of being hit. Although it may be a bit embarrassing, ensuring the safety of others is worth the momentary blushing.
Faster Groups
-
If golfers behind you on the course are playing faster than you, allow them to play the next hole first so that you do not hold up playing time. This is especially common for beginner golfers who require more practice and usually make more swings. Also, if you've lost your ball, let a group go ahead of you instead of making them wait while you look for your ball. This considerate gesture will allow you time to look for your ball without feeling pressured.
The Furthest From the Hole
-
It's a common practice and good manners to allow the golfer that's the furthest away from the hole to take the first turn. This also helps golfers by preventing them from walking in front of other players who may be hitting their ball. If you aren't sure which golfer is the furthest away, then toss a coin for the first play and let each other know when you are hitting so that you don't go at the same time.
