How to Make a Driving Range at Home

If you are serious about golf, and have a yard about 200 to 250 yards in length, you can build your own driving range. After trips to your local home improvement and golf equipment stores, you could have your own driving range installed in a weekend.

      Choose the location for the driving range. You will need to have enough room for your ball to travel without holding back on your swing. Level areas work best. This generally means about 225 yards for proficient amateurs.

      Designate your tee area. Place driving range mats at this point. From there, measure from the tee to the desired yardage points and place a ground stake for each distance.

      Cut four large plywood rectangles approximately four feet wide by three feet high to serve as distance markers. Cover the signs with white spray paint. Allow them to dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat and allow to dry as well.

      Paint the yardage distances on the signs. Typical distances are 100 yards, 150 yards, 200 yards and 250 yards. You can paint the distances on freehand or use a set of number stencils for a more professional look. Use the entire sign area to paint on the numbers, as you will want to be able to see them clearly from your tee off point.

      Nail the finished signs to yard stakes. Replace the ground distance stakes with the finished signs.

      Install a large pre-purchased golf net at the back end of the driving range. This net will stop golf balls from going onto a nearby road or into a neighbor’s yard.
