How to Lift Up During the Downswing on Your Golf Swing

What happens to an untrained golfer when something unexpected occurs during her downswing, such as when a loud noise distracts her as she begins her downswing? The average player would likely be unable to stop her swing and will still hit the ball, albeit poorly, resulting in a poor swing. If you watch footage of professional players, however, you'll notice that if something distracting happens after they have began their swing, they are actually able to stop mid-swing. They can then correct their position, get back in focus and hit the ball correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a downswing stop to your golf practice. In order to be able to do this in real life when you're on the golf course, you need to practice the action beforehand. Professionals do special drills just to build this into muscle memory. Practice beginning a downswing with full velocity and stopping midway.

Before hitting a real shot, focus your energy and attention on making the shot. Shut out all distractions and put your attention on the present moment. Don't think about the the last shot or how you will perform on the next shot; instead put all your attention just on making this one shot.

    • 3

Begin your downswing. If you notice anything is off or if you get distracted for any reason, stop your downswing mid-swing.

    • 4

Readjust your position, refocus your grip and get centered. Begin the downswing again, this time with no distractions.
