How to Start Your Backswing in Golf

There are several key elements to a powerful golf swing, and the backswing is as important as any other. The motion is an afterthought to many golfers, but it shouldn't be ignored. A proper backswing can lead to a significant improvement in yardage and shot direction. Utilizing proper mechanics within the beginning stages of your backswing will help preserve power while allowing you to position the club face for optimum ball striking and lower scores.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust your body and club position before beginning the backswing. Aim the club head toward the desired target, then position your feet. Place your left foot in line with your left armpit, and your right foot in line with the outside of your right shoulder.

    • 2

Begin your backswing by rotating your shoulders, arms, chest and hands. Move all the parts of your upper body in unison as you bring the club back. Keep your feet flat and your lower body relaxed and motionless. Your hips will automatically rotate in line with your upper body.

    • 3

Keep the knee of your back leg bent as you bring the club parallel to the ground. Your top wrist should be flat, and your hands just below the line of your belt. Focus on turning instead of shifting. Stay centered over the ball as you rotate your body.

Maintain the triangle crated by your arms and torso as you near the height of the backswing. At the top of the motion, your club should line up with your toes and point straight upward.
