Callaway X-Forged Specifications

In 2009, Callaway reissued its X-Forged series irons. Their specifications increase force and workability, making them ideal for golfers of an experienced skill set. The standard set of X-Forged irons was pitching wedge through 3-iron; however, a 2-iron and specialty wedges could be custom-made to match the rest of the set. As of early 2011, Callaway was no longer producing its X-Forged irons.
  1. Club Head

    • The forged steel design of the club head creates a soft feel when hit correctly, but a severely uncomfortable feel when mishit. This increases a golfer's awareness of proper contact. The steel also is soft enough to wear over time to show the portion of the club face that most often connects with the ball. The back of the club head is slightly cavity-backed to assist in forgiveness, but the overall blade design is meant to increase force and spin, which translates into workability. The head is standard size, and the lofts vary from 21 degrees to 47 degrees between the 3-iron and pitching wedge.

    Shaft

    • The standard shaft with all X-Forged irons is a Royal Precision Project X Flighted graphite, in either regular, stiff or extra stiff flexes. The speed of your swing dictates the ideal flex -- the faster your swing, the stiffer you need the flex to be. This type of shaft also has a low, flighted kickpoint to create high-trajectory shots. Although this is the standard shaft, it can be easily switched for another type of graphite or even steel, depending on your preference. Steel is heavier and less flexible, providing more consistency and accuracy, while lightweight graphite can increase force.

    Grip

    • The standard grip is a Golf Pride Tour Velvet, which comes in either a 58 or 60 core size. Golfers with larger hands may need a higher core size to comfortably grip the club. These Tour Velvet grips are rounded rubber and do not have a spine running down the backside to assist in proper grip. Although these are the standard grips, they can easily be swapped out for any style or size, rounded or spined.

    Counterfeit

    • The best way to ensure the purchase of legitimate Callaway irons is to buy directly from the manufacturer or from an approved retail vendor. However, the X-Forged are no longer available through Callaway or most of its vendors. Internet auction websites are a popular sales ground for counterfeiters. Whenever possible, ask for a certificate of authenticity, which can be obtained through Callaway or one of its approved vendors. The original price for a set of X-Forged irons was about $800, but secondhand prices can be significantly lower.
