Put on a pair of socks, and, with a slight bend in the knee on either leg, use the tape measure to measure from the center of the inside ankle to the center of the kneecap. Next, measure from the center of the kneecap to your desired pad height (how far you want the pad to come up on your thigh).

Add in your skate size. Consult your skates if you're unsure or don't remember your skate size, which is usually one size lower than your shoe size. Use the calculator to add your skate size number, the first measurement from ankle to knee and the last measurement from knee to thigh. The resulting number is your pad size.

If possible try some pads on in your size with your skates on to ensure fit, as the same pad size may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Before purchase (or before returning the pads if purchased through mail order), attach all the straps and drop down to your knees on a carpeted area. Make sure there are no gaps between your knee and the pads; if so, go with a pad an inch taller.
