How to Size Hockey Sticks

Your hockey stick should be cut relative to your overall size. The size of the stick you choose is also determined by the position you play as offensive players usually use shorter sticks while defensive players like longer ones. Sticks often won't come in the exact size you need, so purchase a longer one and have it cut down to the perfect size.

      Choose a hockey stick you like. Hockey sticks can be made of wood or composite.

      Head to a hockey specialty store or sporting good store. Bring your skates if possible as it is best to try stick sizes out with your skates on.

      Stand up straight in your skates or shoes, and put the toe end of the stick on the ground. You want the stick to hit somewhere between your chin and nose. If you are in your skates, the stick should be around chin level. Mark off the spot with a pen or tape on the stick where you want it to be cut.

      If you play goalie, you have fewer choices of sticks and sizes. Measure the same way as for a regular hockey stick but be aware that you are better off cutting a stick down to size to insure it is the perfect size for you. Tape or mark off where you want the stick cut.

      Have the store cut down the stick with a stick cutting machine to your desired size. They will also round out the edges of the stick.

      If you are cutting the stick at home, use a hack saw or power saw. For composite sticks, take off the end cap first. Smooth out the edges, put the end cap back on and tape up your stick.
