The History of Hockey Equipment

At one point in the NHL, all players, including the goalie, played without a helmet or facemask. Hockey has come a long ways since the no-nonsense, old-school days. Yes. hockey is still a very tough and physical sport, but hockey equipment has improved to protect players.
  1. Hockey Skates

    • You can't play hockey without skates, and the very first skates were invented and patented in Nova Scotia in 1866.

    Pads on Goalies

    • The first known hockey pad was actually inspired by the game of cricket. In 1890, goalies needed a way to protect their bodies from the impact of the hard puck. Cricket pads were the best option at the time, so goalies began using them as protection.

    Pads on Players

    • Today you will see all players on the ice wearing shoulder pads, leg pads and chest protectors. Players also sport shin pads to protect the sensitive area.

    Helmets

    • In the 1930s, players began wearing leather-covered padded helmets. However, the helmets were not required, so very few players wore them. The helmet was ignorantly viewed as a sign of weakness.

    Facemasks on Goalies

    • Players began wearing helmets in the 1930s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that goalies took notice and started wearing masks and neck protectors.
