How to Put on Goalie Equipment

Having the right safety gear and wearing it properly is one of the keys to being a successful goalie. If you have ever watched a hockey game on television, you realize that the goalie takes a lot of physical punishment, each and every game. Goalies are constantly hit with the puck and by other players. Without the gear being worn properly you run the risk of sustaining severe injuries, as well as leaving the net wide open for the opposing team to score.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your athletic cup on. The whole athletic cup actually consists of a protective cup for the groin area as well as the shorts or strap to keep it securely in place.

    • 2

Slip on your pants. The next step is to take your hockey pants and put them on over the athletic cup. These pants are also padded and insulated to help give some protection.

    • 3

Lace up the skates. Put your skates on and make sure they are tied properly. It can be extremely dangerous for your skate to catch on one of the strings and can lead to a bad fall.

    • 4

Tie up your toe ties. These ties are located on the leg pads and are two straps that get laced into the holes of your ice skates to make sure they are secured and stay in place. Tie them up just like you tied up your skates.

    • 5

Unstrap all the Velcro straps and buckles on your leg pads. Place your legs in the pads and secure the straps back in place snugly.

    • 6

Take your chest protector and pull it on over your head. There are two pads attached to the side that you will need to slide your arms through. Once your arms are through you can secure the sleeves at the wrist with a Velcro strap.

    • 7

Take your hockey jersey and carefully pull it down over the chest protector.

    • 8

Put your ice hockey helmet on. Slide the helmet and mask down over your face. Make sure to purchase a mask that has a piece that will protect your neck as well as your face.

Grab the protective gloves and put them on. You want the blocker glove to go on your stick hand, and your catch glove on the other hand.
