1
Put on the protective cup and jock strap. One of the most important pieces of safety equipment is a cup and a jock to keep it in place. Because of the aggressive nature of the sport, there will be times you may take a few hits to the groin.
-
2
Pull on your hockey pants.
-
3
Lace up your skates and tie them securely. Don't put the skates on last because you won't be able to reach them, and the leg pads won't fit correctly.
-
4
Put on your leg pads. Slide the two straps on the leg pads (known as toe ties) in the holes of your skates and tie them like you would your skates or shoestrings. Unstrap all of the buckles on the leg pad and stick your leg inside the pad. Re-fasten the buckles and ensure they are tight, but not so tight they restrict movement.
-
5
Pull the chest protector over your head. There will be two padded sleeves to slide your arms through and secure at the wrist.
-
6
Put your jersey on next. Make sure the jersey fits properly and doesn't get snagged on any of your pads.
-
7
Place your helmet on your head and over your face. Some helmets come with a throat protector, which will keep your throat from taking a hit from a puck. This isn't an essential piece, but it is recommended for the added protection.
-
8
Put on the gloves. Put the blocker on the arm you use to hold your stick, and the catcher on your opposite hand.
