1
Make an assessment of the damage to the skate. If the boot or blade has cracked due to being struck with a hard shot, you may need to buy a new pair of skates or seek professional assistance with the repair. If the blade is scratched or nicked, you can perform the repairs yourself.
-
2
Wipe off the skate blade with a soft cloth. This helps remove any debris, which may cause an uneven finish to the blade if you need to sharpen it. Put your hand in the boot of the skate and turn it upside down, or sit on a chair and place the skate between your legs and hold it firmly by pressing your legs together.
-
3
Locate the area of the blade that requires repair. To fix a dent, nick or scratch, gently go over the damaged area with a file using long even strokes. Continue until the scratch is gone and the blade is even again. If the damage to the blade requires professional attention, a blade sharpener may be used. In that process, the blade is passed several times over a sharpening wheel featuring a diamond-tipped stone.
-
4
Use the soft cloth to wipe the blade again and remove any debris created due to filing.
-
5
Check the sharpness of the blade. Carefully touch the blade with your finger to see if it's as sharp as you would like it to be. If not, continue to file the skate blade using gentle, long strokes until the blade reaches the desired sharpness.
-
6
Use a light coat of oil on the blade to restore polish and help to remove any extra debris. Make a few passes over the blade with a hand stone and wipe it clean with a soft cloth.
