1
Wipe the skates off with a clean cloth to remove any debris on the skate blade and chassis, the plastic cowling that holds the blade to the skate. Put the skate on its side and place it into the holding cradle.

2
Adjust the steel measuring pin on the grinder to your desired radius. This is a matter of preference to many players and coincides with playing style. For example, 9, 11 and 13 are popular choices. The higher the number, the less the belly of the blade touches the ice and vice versa. More radius allows for more stability while less is preferred for sharper turns.
-
3
Secure your measurement on the pin and lock it down. This forces the grinding wheel to an angle that will grind the blade to your desired measurement. Turn on the machine and allow a few seconds for the grinder to achieve maximum speed.

4
Hold the cradled skate securely and gently pass the skate's blade over the grinding wheel. It is imperative that you don't press the skate into the wheel or you'll risk irreparable damage to the blade. Pass the blade over the wheel twice before loosening the skate, flipping it over and grinding the opposite side of the blade.

5
Remove the skate from the cradle, blow away the metal shavings and wipe the blade again. One trick is to run a soft block of wood over the blade to remove additional shavings and clean the blade. Set the skate aside and secure the remaining skate in the cradle. Repeat the process for the other skate.
