1
Understand the purpose. Stick handling shields the puck from opposing players. At a fundamental level, that represents the ultimate goal of stick handling. Stick handling also helps when a player is hoping to fool the goaltender on a breakaway.

2
Learn the fundamentals. Grip the stick with your hands a forearm's length apart. Your top hand should hold the stick tightly while your bottom hand should remain flexible and serve to move your stick. Your hands should move freely from side to side and your wrists should stabilize your grip. Keep the puck in the middle of your blade. Keep your head up when you stick handle.

3
Practice. Stick handle as often as possible when training to learn how to retain the puck. Understand the importance of skating to stick handling. If you can position your body between the opponent and the puck, stick handling will become simpler by allowing you to shield the puck from your opponent.
