How to Clean Hockey Skates

Hockey equipment tends to get thrown in a large hockey duffel bag where it is transported from arena to arena. Although your uniform should be washed and dried after every game, few amateur players have the time and facilities to do that. Your skates usually get thrown in the same bag as the rest of your hockey equipment, and it's important to keep them clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Dry them off with a rag every time you finish a game or a practice. The blades of your hockey skates will get wet as you skate on the ice. Your stainless steel blades are not likely to rust, but don't push the issue by allowing them to remain wet after you finish your game.

Put your skates in skate guards when you are wearing them when not on the ice (in the locker room) or when you are finished and ready to put them in your bag. Without skate guards, the blades of your skates will cut up your bag.

Take a clean wash cloth or rag and wipe down the outside of your skates every two weeks or so. Various pieces of debris can get in the laces' eye holes or anywhere on your boot. You don't want anything to shorten the life of your skates.

Hang your skates up to dry after every game. Your feet will be sweating throughout the course of the game, and that sweat and moisture sitting in your skates can be the perfect breeding ground for germs. Hang your skates up to air dry for at least an hour (preferably two) after every game to avoid getting a nasty fungal infection.

Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the inside of your skates at least once a week to prevent the growth of germs or fungus.
