How to Remove Mold from Hockey Pants

Mold can easily grow on clothing contained in wet or damp areas, including hockey equipment bags. Timing is important. The quicker you attack the problem, the easier it will be to remove the growth and odor from the fabric. You will also need to correct the storage conditions to prevent mold growth in the future. This means removing hockey pants and other gear from the equipment bag as soon as you return home from a game or practice, and let them air dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Go outdoors to remove loose mold growth with a strong brush. Wear a protective mask and gloves if the mold is considerable.

    • 2

Let the sun and air dry the hockey pants and kill any remaining mold spores.

    • 3

Spray the pants with a mildicide (to remove mold and mildew), or soak it in a solution of mildicide and cold water before washing. If you prefer a natural remedy, use white vinegar instead of the chemical mildicide. Use 3/4 cup of vinegar in enough cold water to submerge the pants. If you use a washing machine, the front loading, non-agitator kind is the best option, as it treats the equipment more gently than a top loader machine with an agitator.

A second washing step might be needed. For this, use hot water and a mild detergent. Allow the hockey pants to air dry.

    • 5

Treat the pants with a fabric deodorizer after drying. Spray inside and outside the pants, and then let them air dry to prepare for the next wearing.
