How to Practice Hockey Shots Off the Ice

With any sport a player needs to practice to perfect their skills. In ice hockey a great way to practice is to do off-ice shooting. Practicing shooting off the ice helps the player develop better shooting skills and strengthens their arm muscles. Practicing shooting off the ice is easy to do but takes a little time to perfect.

      Setup a goal or an area that is specified as a goal. If you don't have an actual goal cage, use a cardboard box or a large trash can. Use the cardboard box for both low and high shots. A trash can turned sideways is only used for low shots.

      Center yourself in front of the goal about 3 to 5 feet away. Mark the ground so you know where to take the puck back every time.

      Position yourself in front of the goal with the puck and your stick. Make your practice shots. For kids up to the age of 10, practice shooting 100 to 200 pucks a week. For children aged 11 to 15, practice shooting 250 to 300 shots. For those ages 16 and up, they need to shoot 300 shots per week. All professional hockey players shoot 400 plus practice shots per week.

      Move yourself around into different positions while facing the goal to simulate various shooting points around the ice rink. This helps you become more comfortable with all areas around the goal.
