How to Start an Ice Hockey Cheerleading Squad

You've had thoughts of starting a cheerleading squad for the peewee ice hockey team since your son is on the team and your daughter is involved in the local cheer gym. Ice hockey cheering is a bit different than traditional cheering since there's little space on the sidelines for basket tosses and pyramid making. Here's how to get a cheerleading squad together for your peewee ice hockey team.

Instructions

    • 1

Advertise to see who might be interested in joining an ice hockey cheerleading squad. Put a flier up with your name and phone number at the local ice rink. You may also want to hang one at your local grocery store and think about advertising in your local town paper.

Get a great coach. Choose a cheerleading coach that sees cheerleading for what it is, a sport. Remember, a sports coach should be more than just great at their sport, they must also be a good example to the young ladies that they are coaching.

    • 3

Determine a practice schedule. Before the start of the season you may want to practice twice a week. Once the hockey games start then having cheerleading practice once per week should suffice at the peewee level.

    • 4

Procure the right equipment. Cheering for an ice hockey team requires fairly warm clothing since you'll be cheering in an ice rink. You'll also need all the traditional cheerleading stuff like pompoms and bullhorns. You also want to think of modesty and model that for the kids as well since this tends to give the cheerleading sport the respect it deserves.

Promote fundraising opportunities. You'll have to pay for all that expensive ice hockey cheerleading equipment some how, so get your team thinking about creative ways to raise funds. Involving the team in the decision making process will make their fundraising campaign more successful.
