How to Get a Tripping Penalty in Ice Hockey

Ice hockey has some of the most fast-paced action of any sport around. Stopping that action on occasion is the referee's whistle signaling a penalty. Penalties are part of the game of ice hockey. Despite being illegal, there are proper ways to commit a penalty, such as the tripping penalty in ice hockey.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand that when an ice hockey player commits a penalty it's always within the framework of sportsmanship. A player should not try to intentionally injure or harm another competitor.

    • 2

Know the appropriate game situation to get a tripping penalty. To execute a tripping penalty a player needs to have no other choice. If the tripping does not occur the opposition will gain a serious competitive advantage likely resulting in a goal.

    • 3

Position the offending player behind the opposing player at a proper distance and angle to execute a tripping penalty.

    • 4

Grab the hockey stick with both hands and a firm grip. Sometimes a player if out of position cannot grip the hockey stick with both hands. While the one-handed reaching trip is done, it can result in the loss of the hockey stick. In addition, a tepid tripping attempt is not likely to have the desired outcome even if the stick is not lost.

    • 5

Extend the hockey stick and trip the opposing player. With a firm grip extend the hockey stick, and pull the opposing players legs back toward the offending player.
