How to Get a High Sticking Penalty in Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is a rough sport. Fortunately for players, rules are in place that provide some protection against injury. The penalties vary in seriousness, ranging from 2-minute minor infractions to match or even multiple-game suspensions. High-sticking is one such penalty, and it can range in severity from minor to match. Here's how you might incur this penalty.

Instructions

    • 1

      Skate alongside your opponent.

    • 2

Raise your stick above his or her shoulders.

    • 3

Brush your opponent above his or her shoulders to get a minor penalty for high-sticking. The contact doesn't have to be intentional for the referee to call the penalty, so any touch will do.

    • 4

Get a double-minor penalty for injuring your opponent while your stick is raised. In this case, it doesn't matter whether the contact is intentional or unintentional. The referee will be forced to give you the double-minor in either case because of the injury.

    • 5

Get a match penalty by either injuring your opponent deliberately or attempting to injure your opponent with your raised stick. This is a very serious violation of the rules and of sportsmanship, in general, so the penalty is pretty stiff.
